Which Motors?

Postby jon on Mon Nov 03, 2014 9:52 pm

Can anyone suggest the best electric motors for my new build, a 1/72 scale Leander class frigate. The model is 62 inch long with a beam of 7 inch.
I shall run two motors (one with reversed polarity, for counter rotating props) through a single ESC, powered by a 12v battery.

The warship guys in Scotland use mainly model motors direct 555s or 777s.
777s are getting scarce now though.
measure once ...then measure again.

Hello Brian,

Thank you for the suggestion, I think I'll go with the 555.

On the subject of motors in warships which is most common, direct drive or 'geared' via a belt.

I tried some 555s 'geared' via belt to the shaft in my 1:48 hull of a castle class patrol vessel. 12v but only a 2.8Ah battery; so did not last long at all. The speed was fast enough for scale on full sticks but I would have liked some spare umph for emergencies and I don't usually run at full sticks on other boats.
Are the 555s not strong enough through the belt. Should they be used direct. Shafts low in the keel as typical. What I am looking for is maximum torque and efficiency.

2x 555 via separate sticks and esc
5-blade 50mm props at present albeit the plan shows 40mm and I have ordered just some 60mm for the 5mm shaft.

Vessel is circa 70" x 11" plank on frame

Any suggestions?

For a 1/48 scale castle class
I would recommend 2 fan motors from a car
